Stanley Chapman Young Investigator Research Excellence Award

The Stanley Chapman Young Investigator Research Excellence Award recognizes the accomplishments of dedicated and talented young investigators and is based on the nominee’s outstanding potential and ability to secure extramural funding, research productivity and collaborative efforts. Key criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • Extramural funding (K award applications with fundable scores, multiple clinical trial contracts as Principal Investigator)
  • Productivity (assessed by peer-reviewed publications, review articles, regional and national presentations, and invited research lectures)
  • Intramural and extramural collaborations

Eligibility requirements

  • All nominees must be actively engaged in original research in medicine or medicine-related fields.
  • Nominees should be within 5 years of completing their residency or fellowship.
  • Nominees must have a primary faculty appointment at the instructor, assistant professor or early associate professor level in UMMC's Department of Medicine.

Exclusions

  • Prior recipients of the Stanley Chapman Research Award within last 3 years are ineligible.
  • Self-nominations and posthumous nominations will not be accepted.

Nomination process

Nominators must be mentors or colleagues who have personal knowledge of the nominee’s research accomplishments. Self-nomination is not allowed. Nominations and nomination materials must be submitted by the primary nominator.

The nominations and supporting materials are due by Monday, February 24, 2020. Please submit all nomination materials by email to Kim McGuire.

Nominators must submit the following:

A letter from the nominator summarizing the nominee’s potential for future research productivity, including evidence of extramural funding, peer-reviewed publications and other presentations, and intramural and extramural collaborations. The letter is limited to two single-spaced pages using at least 11-point font.

A second letter of support. This should provide reviewers with helpful insights about the contribution of the young investigator’s research accomplishments to the discipline.

The nominee’s curriculum vitae.

Selection process

Final evaluation of applications and recipient selection will be conducted by the Stanley Chapman Young Investigator Award Selection Committee, comprised of members of the DOM Research Council. The award will only be made should a qualified young investigator be nominated.

Award presentation

The award will be presented March 31, 2020, at the Department of Medicine’s Research Day awards ceremony.
